Ontario's Water and Wastewater Industry

A World of Solutions

As fresh water becomes scarcer, the world's population grows, and urbanization increases, governments and industries worldwide are being challenged to provide clean, safe water in an environmentally friendly, cost-effective manner.

Increasingly, they're turning to Ontario-based companies for help.

Over the past 30 years, our water and wastewater industry has earned a reputation for developing, commercializing and producing innovative technologies that meet the diverse needs of municipal, residential, industrial, and institutional clients worldwide.

In a market that's valued at US $360 billion + and growing fast, Ontario firms are recognized for their expertise in:
  • ultraviolet disinfection
  • membrane technology filtration
  • compact sewage treatment
  • water information and systems software
  • water conservation
  • plant design and operation and plant optimization technologies
They're also well known for their ability to adapt Ontario solutions to local and emerging water quality problems around the world.

Benefit from our experience...

When innovation flows

Our technological advances in water and wastewater treatment have been driven by the demands of a sophisticated customer base that includes the public, industry, and suppliers of drinking water and wastewater services.

Committed to continuous improvement, Ontario companies tap into a collaborative R&D environment that includes creative, outstanding research centres that work hand-in-hand with industry on issues ranging from water treatment to water security, groundwater contamination to water resource management, water quality to water adaptation, in the face of climate change.

And helping to ensure that water technology breakthroughs reach the market quickly are the Canadian Water Network and the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Earth and Environmental Technologies.

Quality that's unsurpassed

Water and wastewater products and services are developed and produced by people, and our engineers and skilled trades are recognized as the best in the business. In fact, we have the most educated workforce in the G7.

Ontario is also one of the most culturally diverse, with people from more than 170 different ethnic backgrounds who speak more than 100 languages. That's a big advantage when you're innovating for - and selling to - world markets.

Whatever your requirement, you'll find an Ontario water or wastewater company that can fulfill it.

Put our innovation to work for you.

Trojan Technologies: improving water quality and availability on six continents

Trojan Technologies' tagline is "water confidence" and the London, Ontario-based company delivers just that to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Trojan is the undisputed world leader in ultraviolet water treatment solutions in five key markets: municipal drinking water, municipal wastewater, environmental contaminant treatment, industrial/commercial water treatment, and consumer water purification. The company, which has its R&D, training and manufacturing centres in London, works in more than 80 countries, treating over 26 billion gallons of water a day. What's been key to Trojan's success? "We've developed innovative technology that's environmentally safe and that we're constantly improving on," says Trojan President Marvin DeVries. "It's backed by a lifetime performance guarantee and supported by highly trained service people on the ground all over the world.” Adds DeVries, "Ontario has some of the brightest engineering talent to be found anywhere and that's what helps keep us at the forefront."

EnviroSim's modeling software is taking the wastewater industry by storm

EnviroSim may be a small company - there are just 10 people on staff - but it's making a big impact worldwide from its head office in Flamborough, Ontario. EnviroSim's field is the analysis and design of wastewater treatment plants and its Microsoft Windows-based simulator, called BioWin, is fast becoming the tool of choice for engineers and certified operators in the field in North America, Europe and Australia. BioWin creates a virtual representation of a wastewater treatment plant, which allows for testing design criteria before building or conducting upgrades on an existing facility, saving time and money. EnviroSim is continuously improving the product through R&D with Ontario-based university research centres and utilities. And to be sure it's being used to its optimum potential by clients, the company runs product-training courses worldwide and provides technical support from three global locations. There's no secret to EnviroSim's success according to founder and President Peter Dold. "Our product, which was developed here in Ontario by a group of exceptional people, is innovative, easy to use and the results are unmatched."

Burnside International: applying Ontario excellence abroad

Burnside International is marking its 10th anniversary this year - and it has every reason to celebrate. The Orangeville, Ontario-based engineering firm specializes in designing infrastructure for water distribution and storm and sanitary collection, including water and wastewater infrastructure, and has major projects underway in parts of Africa and the Caribbean. Though Burnside International is young, its parent, R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited, has been in business for close to 40 years, and the international arm has access to that wealth of experience - and the experience it draws on by partnering with other global firms and international specialists. "As a Canadian company we're fortunate because the Canadian brand is very strong abroad," says Rui De Carvalho, President of Burnside International. "Canadian companies - ours included - are well regarded for their technical abilities and their sensitivity to local cultures and the capabilities that others can offer." Adds De Carvalho, "The fact that our workforce is culturally diverse also gives us a leg-up, because we can speak with our clients in their language."
