Six reasons innovative companies call OCE
1. Introductions to exceptional researchers.
Thousands of smart, talented scientists with state-of-the art labs work here. OCE staff have solid working relationships with researchers, scientific organizations and industry associations across the province. They know where the experts are, what they are working on and how that expertise can help you. 2. Access to expertise in five hot sectors.
Ontario has become a North American centre for groundbreaking research and world-leading expertise. OCE specializes in five key areas:
- Communications and Information Technology.
- Earth and Environmental Technologies.
- Energy.
- Materials and Manufacturing.
- Photonics.
The right money at the right time can make a world of difference in the race to market. OCE funding is available to support partnerships between companies and researchers at Ontario universities, colleges and teaching hospitals. It can be used for a range of activities including the development of new technologies, proof-of-concept testing or simply start-up seed capital. 4. Experience creating market-focused R&D collaborations.
OCE brings together companies and publicly funded researchers in win/win partnerships. OCE staff offer a unique combination of expertise in both business and science. They know the most effective ways to do industrial research collaborations in Ontario, and they put that knowledge to work for you. 5. Exceptional R&D tax credits.
Canada's R&D tax incentives are among the most generous in the world and Ontario tops-up the federal program with additional incentives. The after-tax cost of a $100 R&D expenditure can be reduced to less than $44, and if you're a small business, it can be reduced to less than $38. OCE connections can help you leverage your R&D budget even further. 6. Business-friendly approach to IP commercialization.
We recognize that it takes multiple skills to commercialize breakthrough technologies. That's why companies can acquire the rights to intellectual property developed at our public research centres. We also provide a 10-year provincial income tax exemption for new corporations that commercialize intellectual property developed by qualifying Canadian universities, colleges or research institutes. OCE specializes in IP commercialization.
What happens when companies make the OCE research connection?
Companies in virtually every industry have found new levels of success through OCE supported R and D partnerships with Ontario universities and other publicly funded research centres.
- Van-Rob Stampings, a 30 year-old auto parts manufacturer, worked with researchers at Ryerson University to design a better automotive door hinge with lower production costs. The result? Increased sales.
- EION Inc. and researchers at the University of Ottawa created a way to bring wireless communications to rural areas. It has since deployed more than 25,000 broadband wireless links in Africa, India, the Middle East and North America.
- Theralase Technologies Inc. collaborated with the University Hospital Network to develop the only FDA-approved therapeutic cold laser system for chronic knee pain. Theralase lasers are now widely used for pain management and injury treatment.
- Cleanfield Energy Inc., through a research partnership with McMaster University, accelerated the commercialization of its innovative wind turbine designed specifically for use in dense urban settings.
