ONTARIO WORKING WITH THE ONTARIO AEROSPACE COUNCIL (OAC) TO PRESENT THE ONTARIO AEROSPACE INDUSTRY TO THE WORLD AT THE FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW 2010

The Ontario Aerospace Council (OAC) and the Government of Ontario are working together to present the Ontario aerospace industry to the world at the Farnborough International Airshow, July 19-25, 2010, in Farnborough, UK. This major international air show offers a variety of ways for Ontario aerospace companies to benefit through their own efforts, with the support and assistance of OAC and the Government of Ontario. Minister of Economic Development and Trade Sandra Pupatello will be leading Ontario's participation at the airshow.

A range of companies representing the Ontario aerospace industry is slated to participate in and exhibit their products and services during this high-profile event, where the global aerospace industry gathers. Members of the Ontario Aerospace Showcase will be situated on a 72 square metre peninsula on the main aisle, adjacent to the Canadian Pavilion which will be based on the unique design developed in 2008. Though the support of Ontario and OAC, participating firms will be provided with current market intelligence on business opportunities, support for their efforts to link to targeted customer/client opportunities, travel guidelines, site plans, exhibitors lists, and more.

At the last Farnborough International Airshow, in 2008, US$88.7 billion in orders for some 480 aircraft and equipment systems were announced, more than doubling 2006's figures of US$42 billion. The world's largest temporary exhibition also saw more than 130,000 trade visitors, enjoyed representation from 40 countries and had 29 international and regional pavilions.

Today, there are more than 350 aerospace suppliers in Ontario. Ontario companies are world leaders in aircraft environmental control and landing-gear systems, training simulators, small turbine engines, satellites and more. Ontario companies design and assemble regional turbo props, business jets and light aircraft.

Ontario is also involved in more than 100 international projects such as the Airbus A350 and A380, Boeing 787 and the U.S.-led F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Ontario wins contracts worldwide by offering:
  • innovative product design and technology development
  • precision manufacturing of exceptional quality, and
  • highly competitive pricing
Ontario firms continue to invest to pursue new opportunities for growth. For example, Pratt & Whitney Canada, with R&D labs in Mississauga, Ontario and Longueuil, Quebec, is investing $1.5 billion over five years to stay at the forefront of green engine technologies. Cyclone Manufacturing, based in Mississauga, Ontario, is investing $50 million to develop a new generation of structural components using lightweight composite materials.

KPMG's 2010 Competitive Alternatives study of international business costs found that aerospace manufacturing costs are lower in Canada than in France, the U.K., the Netherlands, Italy, Germany or Japan.

These factors and more illustrate how Ontario is helping the global aerospace industry meet today's needs and tomorrow's challenges.
