June 17, 2009EXPORT OPTIMISM REBOUNDSOntario exporter confidence rebounded in the spring from a record low six months ago with the largest single increase since the post-9/11 period in Export Development Canada's (EDC) semi-annual Trade Confidence Index (TCI).
Ontario's index rose to 69, up from 60, while the overall index jumped to 68.5 from a record low of 61 six months ago. Key to the jump is a sense that both global and domestic economic conditions will improve.
The survey examines the attitudes of Canadian exporters through five index elements: trade opportunities, export sales, domestic sales, and both domestic and global economic conditions.
Ontario exporters accounted for 44% of respondents of a random telephone survey of 1000 Canadian businesses that export or plan to export. Regionally, Western Canada posted the most optimistic score of 71 (up from 63 in the fall of 2008), Atlantic Canada at 67 (up from 58) and Quebec at 66 (up from 62).
